The Journey Of
“Shido School Of Self Defense”
The school was first opened in the fall of 1991 in Calvert County Maryland.
The Shido School of Self-Defense offers comprehensive instruction rooted in traditional martial arts disciplines. Our curriculum integrates key principles and techniques from Kempo, Karate, Judo, and Haka-ryu Jujutsu. The primary objective of our training is to equip participants with practical and effective self-defense skills. We focus on teaching techniques designed to enhance personal safety and confidence in various situations, emphasizing awareness, discipline, and appropriate responses to potential threats. Our lead instructor, Kyoshi Tom Korentsides, brings extensive experience to the program. With a distinguished teaching career that began in 1991, Kyoshi Korentsides has been a dedicated and valued instructor with the Calvert County Parks and Recreation Department for decades. Originally from New York City, he has successfully trained and mentored a diverse range of students, including children, teenagers, and adults, within the Southern Communities Center area. Beyond the physical aspects of self-defense, our martial arts program is also designed to instill vital life skills, particularly in younger participants. It fosters self-control, discipline, respect for oneself and others, heightened focus, and cultivates a strong sense of personal responsibility and confidence.
